Every one of these is the same trick in a different place: one anchor, two supports, one repeated colour. Once you can see that, the rest of the range organises itself.
1. The tray, done properly
A three-tier tray takes eight to twelve pieces, not twenty. Tallest on top, three small ones in the middle, the widest and heaviest at the bottom with something soft to hide the metal rim. If it looks cluttered, the fix is nearly always removing two things rather than rearranging ten. Shop tray-scale pieces.
2. The mantel, in thirds
Divide the shelf into three and give each third one job: a tall object at one end, a low group at the other, and negative space in the middle. Symmetry looks formal and takes twice the pieces; thirds look styled and take half. A single sign can carry the tall third on its own.
3. The door
Doors are seen from six feet away, which means detail is wasted and silhouette is everything. Go bigger than feels right and use one colour that contrasts with the door itself. Anything hanging outdoors needs to be metal or sealed, because unfinished wood swells in a single wet night.
4. The table people sit at
One centrepiece, low enough to see across (about twelve inches is the limit before conversation starts going around it), plus something scattered at each place. Confetti shapes and small cutouts do the second job for a few dollars. See centerpieces.
5. The wall behind the cake
This is the photograph everyone takes, so it is the one surface worth over-decorating. A banner with a real dip in the middle, a cluster of cutouts at one side rather than spread evenly, and nothing at eye level in the centre where heads will be.
